The Nasdaq's gain of 33.25% year to date through 9/15 is the fourth best year on record for the index. Since the index was created in 1971, only 1991, 1995, and 2003 have seen bigger gains through September 15th. Below we highlight the years when the index was up more than 20% through September 15th. These big gains don't necessarily equate to more gains for the rest of the year, however. Seven years have seen continued gains from 9/15 to the end of the year and five have seen declines. The average gain for the rest of the year following 20%+ gains through 9/15 has only been 2.15%. The biggest gain for the rest of the year came in 1999 when the index gained 44.6% from 9/15 to 12/31, while 1987 saw the biggest decline for the rest of the year at -25.22% ('87 crash).
