As we enter the fourth quarter, we calculated the average returns of the S&P 500 over the last five and fifteen years and compared them to today. As the chart and table below highlight, the fourth quarter is typically very good for the market with an average gain of 6.3% over the last fifteen years and an average of 7.2% over the last five years. Since 1992, there have only been two years where the S&P 500 was down in Q4 (1994 and 2000).
