While everyone debates whether or not private equity is in the midst of a bubble, news reporting on the subject has definitely gotten a bit frothy. The chart below shows, on a monthly basis, the number of times the term 'private equity' has shown up in the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal. In January 2003, the term appeared 32 times. In May 2007, the term showed up 461 times. That's over a 1000% increase.
To put this move into perspective, from January 2003 to its peak on May 29th, China's Shanghai Composite Index (which most consider to be in a bubble) was up a mere 219%.
