Global Stock Market Returns Year to Date

Below we highlight the year to date returns (local currency) of major equity market indices for 75 countries.  Of these 75 countries, 26 are up year to date while 49 are down.  The average country is down 5.72% year to date, and the United States' S&P 500 is down 9.17%, ranking it 43rd out of 75.

Over the last couple of years, the decoupling theory that countries are now strong enough to no longer fall prey to a declining US economy and stock market has taken hold.  The BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India and China) are a major part of the decoupling theory, but as shown below, 3 of the 4 are down more than the US is year to date.  Russia is down 9.91%, China is down 17.12% and India is down 18.46%.  Brazil is the only one up at +1.16%.  The real theme taking place is that oil exporting countries are doing much better than oil importing countries.  Looking at the list of positive stock markets year to date, many are from oil-rich Middle Eastern countries.  Expect this trend to hold as long as oil continues to rally.
